At the Fence: Abuse Issues

a Dear At the Fence:

I have a very serious question. I was taken away from my mother and given to my father about 3 months ago, and I've never liked him. He abuses me physically and mentally, and my mother would like to get custody back so that I can go and live with her. She doesn't know if it's possible, and I don't want to go back with my dad, I hate him so much.

But the only thing is that she works from 4pm to 2:45 am, but her boyfriend is home, and then he goes to work at 9:30pm, and that would leave me home for 5 hours. I am 16 and we have a very safe neighborhood.  Please help me!

Thank you sooooo much. I have needed someone to answer this for so long.

Help!

Dear Help!

At your age, a judge should take your wishes into consideration in making a decision about where you live. Your mom should be able to get a hearing so you can ask the judge to change the custody arrangement. The judge would have to consider all kinds of things, such as how long you would be alone, who would watch over you, etc. However, the judge should also know about your father's abuse. Physical abuse is against the law.

Best wishes
