At the Fence: Abuse Issues

a Dear At the Fence:

I have a step dad that tries to start fights with me and hits me with his fist. He abuses my mom but she's scared to tell and I'm always crying. I'm a 14 year old boy with a life and when they fight it hurts my grades, myself and my mom. So please, do you have some advice?

Abused

Dear Abused:

I don't know where you live, but in the United States it is almost always against the law for an adult to hit someone your age. It's also against the law for him to hit your mom.  The next time he hits you or your mom, find a way to call 911. The police should investigate and you must tell them what has been going on. If you are afraid to call the police, tell someone at your school about this abuse, they are required by law to report it to the authorities who will investigate it.

Most abusers will not just stop hitting. They need to understand that they can go to jail for this. Above all, do not try to make him stop yourself, do not become violent with him. He is breaking the law, and you need to use the law to stop him.

Take care
