At the Fence: Religious Issues

Dear At the Fence:

I recently had someone ask me about what Christians say about dancing.  I was wondering if there were passages in the bible that talk about dancing being all bad.  I guess my personal feelings are that it is a individual decision on whether to dance or not.  Given the right circumstances I don't see why it would be wrong.  Celebrating a marriage is one example.  As long as there is not drinking involved and lewd music wouldn't that be okay?  Anyway, any input I could have would be helpful.  Thanks!

Just Asking

Dear Just Asking:

Certainly dancing is mentioned in the Bible. Dancing to praise or worship God was acceptable and encouraged. Dancing in celebration of a wedding in order to celebrate God's love was common. However, the types of dancing performed was different then. Dancing was not usually performed by couples, but as groups, or individually. It was not part of courtship. Pagans used dancing erotically and pagan practices were forbidden.

Today's Christian churches may have different views on dancing, from forbiding it altogether, to accepting it. So, the Bible's stance on dancing is that all things must be to the glory of God, so Christians must ask themselves if the dancing they do glorifies God or body.

Best wishes
